What is the Difference Between Composite vs Timber Garden Rooms
The short answer is that composite garden rooms need effectively no maintenance while timber ones need regular treating, and that single difference drives most of the decision. Composite cladding is a blend of wood fibre and polymer with a woodgrain finish that never needs painting, staining or sealing, whereas timber cladding requires ongoing care to hold its appearance and resist the British weather. Both can produce an excellent, fully insulated, year-round garden room, so the honest question is not which material is better in the abstract but which suits how you want to live with the building over the next fifteen or twenty years.
If you want a building that looks like wood but that you can genuinely forget about, composite is the stronger choice. If you actively want a natural material, enjoy the way real timber weathers, and do not mind maintaining it, timber has real appeal. From working with clients weighing this up, we’ve found the decision usually comes down to one honest conversation about whether the maintenance will realistically get done, because a well-maintained timber room is a beautiful thing and a neglected one is not.
What each material actually is
Timber cladding is solid wood, usually cedar, larch or treated softwood, fixed as boards to the building’s frame. It is a natural product, so every board differs slightly, and it responds to moisture and temperature by moving a little through the year.
Composite cladding is manufactured, combining wood fibre with a polymer binder. Our system is co-extruded, meaning a tough outer protective skin is bonded around a stable core during production. That outer layer carries the woodgrain texture and colour, and it is what resists the fading, staining and moisture ingress that weather natural timber. It is available in four colours and can be specified as a single or dual colour finish.
Maintenance, the deciding factor for most people
This is where the two diverge most sharply. Timber needs periodic treatment, typically re-staining, oiling or sealing on a cycle of every year or two depending on the product, the exposure and the finish you want to keep. Miss a cycle or two and the finish fades, the surface roughens, and in worse cases you get rot, warping or insect damage at the vulnerable points such as cut ends and ground-facing boards.
Composite asks for almost nothing. There is no painting, staining or sealing, and nothing to rot. An occasional wash down to remove general dirt, algae or pollen is typically all it needs to keep looking its best. Over a twenty year life, that is a considerable amount of weekend time and a meaningful amount of money in materials that you simply never spend.
In our experience, composite works better than timber for most garden rooms because it removes the maintenance cycle entirely, and that matters more over time than people expect at the point of purchase, whereas timber’s appearance is directly tied to upkeep that is easy to postpone once the novelty of the new building has worn off. It is worth being realistic with yourself about this rather than optimistic.
How each one ages
Timber changes as it weathers, and whether that is a virtue or a problem depends entirely on your taste. Left untreated, cedar and larch silver down to an attractive grey, though rarely evenly, since the sheltered faces and the exposed faces weather at different rates. Treated timber holds its colour for as long as the treatment lasts, then fades progressively until it is redone.
Composite holds its appearance far more consistently. The colour is built into the material rather than sitting on the surface as a coating, so it does not peel or flake, and the co-extruded outer skin is specifically designed to resist fading and staining. Some very gradual mellowing in the first period of exposure is normal for composite products generally, but there is no maintenance cycle driving how it looks.
Cost, upfront and over time
Basic timber buildings can be cheaper to buy, particularly at the shed and summer house end of the market where the specification is thin. Once you are comparing like for like against a properly insulated, year-round building with quality cladding, the upfront gap narrows considerably.
The clearer difference is total cost of ownership. Timber carries an ongoing cost in treatment products and either your time or a decorator’s fee, repeated for the life of the building. Composite does not. For reference, our standard composite garden room ranges, the Ashmere and Oakland, start from around £9,714 supply-only or £12,096 fully installed for the smallest 3.3m x 2.3m size, rising to roughly £29,845 installed for the largest standard size at 8m x 4.5m, across sixteen standard configurations with bespoke sizes available.
A fully installed price includes VAT and installation, the insulated walls, the EPDM rubber-coated 100mm insulated roof, anthracite grey PVCu double glazing, a Styrofloor insulated floor and a first-socket electrical package with spotlights, wiring and a fuse box. The base and ground screws are quoted separately since every garden differs.
Where timber genuinely wins
It would be dishonest to pretend composite is the answer for everyone, so here is the fair case for timber. It is a natural, renewable material, and for some people that matters a great deal on principle. The look and feel of solid wood is difficult to replicate exactly, and if you love the silvered cedar aesthetic, that is a specific thing composite approximates rather than duplicates. Timber is also repairable in ways composite is not, since a damaged board can often be sanded, filled or refinished rather than replaced.
If your garden room is a design feature you want to fuss over and you enjoy that kind of upkeep, timber can be genuinely rewarding. The mistake is choosing it while quietly hoping it will not need the attention.
What does not change between the two
Cladding is only the outer layer, and plenty of what determines whether a garden room is any good is the same regardless of material. Insulation decides whether the room is usable in January. The roof build-up determines weatherproofing and heat retention. The glazing affects light, security and warmth. The base affects cost, installation time and how much of your lawn survives.

How to decide
Ask yourself three questions. Will the maintenance realistically happen, honestly. Do you specifically want a natural material, or do you want the look of wood. And are you judging cost on the purchase price or on what the building will have cost you in twenty years.
