Can I Have a Garden Room for a Snooker Table?

A garden room can absolutely house a snooker table, but the two things that decide whether it works are space and weight. For a full-size table you need a room of roughly 22ft x 16ft, around 6.7m x 4.9m, to allow full cueing on every side, and the building needs a base specified to carry a table that can weigh well over a tonne once the slate bed is in place. Get those two right and a garden snooker room gives you a dedicated, year-round space that an indoor room rarely can.

A full-size English snooker table has a playing surface of about 11ft 8.5in by 5ft 10in, with outer dimensions close to 12ft by 6ft. The room has to add cueing clearance around all four sides, and a standard cue is around 57 to 58 inches long, which is where the 22ft by 16ft guide comes from. From working with clients on hobby and games rooms, we’ve found this is the single most common mistake people make, because they measure for the table itself and forget that you have to be able to get a full cue stroke in behind every cushion. Plan for the cueing space, not just the table.

How much space do you really need?

If you can give a full-size table the full 22ft by 16ft, you will be able to play any shot with a standard cue and no compromise. In practice, not every garden has room for that, and there are sensible ways to work within a slightly tighter footprint. Using a shorter rest cue on the most awkward shots lets you reduce the clearance on the long sides, and many players are perfectly happy with a little less room than the textbook ideal.

It is worth being honest about the numbers here. Our largest standard room is 8m x 4.5m, which gives you generous length but sits just under the ideal 4.9m width for completely unrestricted cueing on a full-size table. For a true full-size setup with full clearance, a bespoke width is the better route, and because our system is modular we can tailor the dimensions to suit. If you are fitting a smaller table, a 10ft, 9ft or 8ft, then a standard room size will comfortably do the job with room to spare.

Can a garden room take the weight?

This is the question we are asked most, and it is a fair one. A full-size slate-bed snooker table is genuinely heavy. The slate alone usually comes in five sections that together account for most of a total weight that can run well over a tonne once the table is assembled. That load is spread across the table’s legs and frame rather than concentrated in one spot, but it still has to be planned for properly.

The key is the base. Our buildings sit on a no-dig base using a ground-screw and joist system, and for a snooker room we specify that base to carry the load of the table from the outset, rather than treating it as an afterthought. This is exactly the kind of detail worth raising at the design stage, because the right answer depends on the table size and where it sits in the room. We would always rather engineer the floor for the table you are buying than leave you guessing.

Keeping the table in good condition all year

Snooker tables do not like damp or big swings in temperature. Moisture affects the cloth, can warp timber components over time and is no friend to a precision playing surface, which is why a garden snooker room has to be more than just weatherproof. It has to stay dry and stable inside.

In our experience, an insulated composite room works better than an uninsulated timber cabin for a snooker table because it holds a steady internal temperature and keeps condensation and damp at bay, protecting both the slate and the cloth, whereas a thin-walled cabin lets the cold and moisture in and shortens the life of the table. Our rooms come with fully insulated walls, an EPDM rubber-coated 100mm insulated roof and double glazing, so a small heater or an air conditioning unit keeps conditions right through the year. Lighting and the finishing touches

Good, even lighting over the table matters more in snooker than almost any other room. A traditional overhead snooker light or a run of well-positioned spotlights gives you shadow-free coverage across the full playing surface, which makes a real difference to your game. Our rooms include an electrical package with spotlights, wiring and a fuse box as standard, and the lighting layout can be planned around the table position so the table is lit properly from above.

Beyond that, the room is yours to finish. There is space for seating, a scoreboard, a cue rack and even a bar area if the footprint allows, turning it into a proper games room rather than just somewhere the table lives. Pricing depends heavily on size, and a full-size snooker room usually means a larger or bespoke build, so the most accurate figure comes from a quote around your actual plans.
